Kenya has a big advantage for remote work: strong English and a time zone that overlaps the UK and Europe all day. This guide covers the kinds of online work that pay, what clients pay, the government's Ajira Digital programme, how to get paid to M-Pesa, the tax basics, and how to avoid the scams that target job seekers.

Online work that pays

The common entry points are:

  • Virtual assistant: inbox, calendar, admin and research for business owners abroad.
  • Customer support: email and chat support in a client's help desk.
  • Data entry and data checking: see our data entry guide.
  • Transcription and writing.
  • Social media and digital marketing.
  • Design, video editing and development, for those with the skills.

What clients pay

WhatPublished figure
Kenyan virtual assistants on Upwork$6–15 an hour (the rates freelancers list)
Virtual assistants worldwide on Upwork$10–20 an hour typical, from past contracts

The Kenya figure is what freelancers list on their profiles, so treat it as a guide. For context only, Kenya's minimum wage for a general labourer in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret is KSh 18,047.40 a month under the Regulation of Wages (General) (Amendment) Order, 2026. It's a legal floor for local employment, not a guide to what foreign clients pay.

Our legit online jobs guide shows what clients pay by role and how to set your rate.

Your hours are a selling point

Nairobi is UTC+3 all year, with no daylight saving.

Client's working dayIn Nairobi
London 9 to 5, winter (GMT)noon to 8 pm
London 9 to 5, summer (BST)11 am to 7 pm
New York 9 to 5, winter (EST)5 pm to 1 am
New York 9 to 5, summer (EDT)4 pm to midnight

UK and European clients overlap your normal day. US clients overlap your evening; put the hours you can cover on your profile in the client's time zone.

Your English is a selling point too

In the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, Kenya ranks 19th of 123 countries, in the "high" band. The index comes from people who chose to take EF's online test, so clients still test you individually. A tested level on your profile, such as C1 on the CEFR scale, carries more weight than a country ranking. See our CEFR guide.

Ajira Digital

Ajira Digital is a government programme to help young Kenyans find online work. Makueni County describes it as giving youth "the tools, training and mentorship needed for them to work anywhere and at any time", working with the Ministry of ICT, with training at Community Information Centres that "offer basic ICT training and E-government services to the citizens." The programme's official site is ajiradigital.go.ke. Only register through official government pages, and never pay anyone who claims to sell you an Ajira job.

Getting paid to M-Pesa

Many clients pay through PayPal. In July 2025, Safaricom added PayPal withdrawals to the M-PESA app. As HapaKenya reported, the steps are:

  1. Update the M-PESA app.
  2. Open PayPal under the Finance or Global Services section.
  3. Log in to PayPal and link the accounts if they aren't linked yet.
  4. Enter the amount, check the fees and exchange rate shown, and confirm.

Funds typically arrive "within minutes to a few hours", depending on the amount. Use only the official M-PESA app for this, and compare what each payment method costs you before you agree how a client pays.

Tax basics

Online income is taxable for Kenyan tax residents. The Kenya Revenue Authority's individual income tax rates (from 1 July 2023), per year:

Taxable incomeRate
First KSh 288,00010%
Next KSh 100,00025%
Next KSh 5,612,00030%
Next KSh 3,600,00032.5%
Above KSh 9,600,00035%

KRA gives personal relief of KSh 28,800 a year, and individual returns are due "on or before 30th June of the following year."

Scam signs

Scammers know job seekers are keen. The FTC's advice applies in Kenya too:

  • "Don't pay for the promise of a job. Anyone who does is a scammer."
  • "Ignore generic and unexpected texts, WhatsApp, or Telegram messages about jobs."
  • Task scams: you're paid fake "commissions" for clicks, then asked to deposit your own money, "usually in crypto", to unlock them. You lose the deposit.
  • "Never bank on a 'cleared' check", and "Reshipping goods is never a real job."

A real client interviews you, tests you, and pays you. You never pay them.
