Remote work for businesses in the US, UK and Australia is real, and so are the scams built to look like it. This guide is for anyone looking for online jobs in the Philippines, remote jobs in Kenya or Nigeria, or legit work from home anywhere: how to tell a real job from a scam, where the work comes from, what clients pay, how to set your rate, the hours you'll work and how to get paid.

What a legit remote job looks like, and the red flags

A real remote job has a few things in common:

  • A business you can check. A website, a company page, reviews and a real person's name.
  • A clear job. The tasks, hours, rate, and how and when you'll be paid, in writing.
  • A fair test. A short test or a small paid task that matches the job.
  • A real conversation. A video or voice call before you start.

Red flags, from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and from what scams have in common:

Red flagWhy it matters
You must pay to get the job: "training", "registration" or equipmentThe FTC: honest employers "will never ask you to pay to get a job"
They send you a check to deposit, then ask you to send money backThe FTC: "No honest potential employer will ever send you a check to deposit"
An unexpected WhatsApp, Telegram or text message offering "tasks" such as rating products or "boosting"The FTC calls these task scams. You get a small payout, "usually $5 to $20", then they ask you to deposit your own money, "usually in crypto"
Pay far above the normal range, with no test or interviewReal clients test before they pay well
They ask for your ID, bank login or a one-time code before any offerNo real employer needs your one-time codes. Never share them

If something feels wrong, stop, and check with someone you trust before you send anything.

Where the work comes from

  • Marketplaces. On sites like Upwork, clients post jobs and you send proposals. Upwork charges freelancers a service fee of 0% to 15% of what they earn. OnlineJobs.ph focuses on Filipino workers; employers there pay $69 or $99 a month to contact people, because its free employer plan can't message anyone.
  • BPOs and outsourcing companies. They hire you as an employee, usually with training and fixed shifts. The Philippine IT-BPM industry employed about 1.9 million people in 2025 (IBPAP).
  • Agencies. They match VAs and support staff with foreign clients. Ask who pays you, how and when.
  • Your own network. Past employers, LinkedIn and referrals from happy clients.
  • StaffPick. You make a free profile, take English, typing and role tests plus an ID check, and businesses in the US, UK and Australia find you by your scores. StaffPick is not a job board and can't promise you a job, but your tested profile is what businesses search. Joining is free, and StaffPick never takes a cut of your pay. What clients pay by role

There are two kinds of pay numbers, and mixing them up leads to bad rates. Freelance rates are what foreign clients pay remote workers. Local salaries are what employers in your own country advertise.

Freelance rates. Upwork's typical hourly ranges, from contracts worldwide, October 2026 (from its cost pages, such as the one for virtual assistants):

RoleTypical rate per hour
Virtual assistant$10–20
Customer service$10–19
Appointment setter$10–20
Bookkeeper$11–25
Social media manager$14–35
Video editor$6–25
Graphic designer$15–35
Web developer$15–50

For virtual assistants by country, the rates VAs list on Upwork are $6 to $15 an hour in Kenya and $8 to $12 in Nigeria. Upwork's overall VA median is $13, and it says Philippines-based freelancers often sit at the lower end of the $10 to $20 range for general admin work.

Full-time pay from foreign clients, Philippines. OnlineJobs.ph's salary guide (last updated April 2026) reports what full-time Filipino remote workers say they earn, in US dollars a month:

RoleBeginner to expert, a month
Virtual assistant$480–2,000
Customer service$400–900
Social media$500–1,200
Video editor$350–1,000
Accountant$600–2,000
Web developer$500–3,000

For virtual assistants, that's $480 to $900 for beginners, $800 to $1,100 at mid-level and $1,200 to $2,000 for experts.

Local salaries, Philippines. Indeed Philippines shows these monthly figures from local job postings (October 2026): virtual assistant ₱27,225, customer service ₱21,242, bookkeeper ₱24,036, video editor ₱25,973 and software developer ₱43,028. These are local employers, usually with local benefits. They are not what foreign clients pay.

Minimum wages are a floor, not a price guide. Metro Manila's minimum for non-agriculture work is ₱755 a day from 26 September 2026 (Wage Order NCR-28). In Kenya, the minimum for a general labourer in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret is KES 18,047.40 a month, backdated to 1 May 2026 (Regulation of Wages (General) (Amendment) Order, 2026, as summarised in Grant Thornton's wages guide). Nigeria's national minimum wage is ₦70,000 a month, with a review due in June 2027. These tell you the legal floor for local employees, not what skilled remote work is worth.

How to set your rate

  1. Find the range for your role in the tables above.
  2. Place yourself in it. New, with no reviews: the lower part. Tested scores, samples and a few happy clients: the middle. Specialist skills and long experience: the top.
  3. Count your costs. Platform fees (0% to 15% on Upwork), payment and exchange fees, internet, power backup, equipment and tax.
  4. Do the monthly maths. Rate times hours. At $6 an hour for 160 hours, that's $960 a month before fees. A 10% fee leaves $864.
  5. Compare with local pay in your own currency, at today's exchange rate, so you know what the work is worth to you.
  6. Raise your rate when clients come back for more, when you add a skill, and at least once a year.

Use one clear rate for each role you offer, and put it on your profile. On StaffPick, your profile shows the rate you set, and you keep all of it.

The hours you'll work

Clients in the US usually want some overlap with their working day. Here is a 9 am to 5 pm day in US Eastern time (New York), in your local time:

Your cityUS winter (EST)US summer (EDT)
Manila10 pm to 6 am9 pm to 5 am
Nairobi5 pm to 1 am4 pm to midnight
Lagos3 pm to 11 pm2 pm to 10 pm

Other clients fit your day better:

  • Australia, from Manila. Sydney's 9 to 5 is 7 am to 3 pm in Manila, or 6 am to 2 pm from October to April, when Sydney is on daylight saving time.
  • The UK, from Lagos and Nairobi. London's 9 to 5 is 10 am to 6 pm in Lagos and noon to 8 pm in Nairobi in UK winter, an hour earlier in UK summer.
  • The UK, from Manila. London's 9 to 5 is 5 pm to 1 am in Manila, or 4 pm to midnight in UK summer.

Manila, Nairobi and Lagos don't change their clocks, so your hours only move when your client's country does.

Think about how long you can keep up a night shift. If you'd rather not work all night, look for clients who need part of the day covered, such as four hours of overlap, or clients in Australia or the UK.

Getting paid and taxes

Agree how you'll be paid before you start: the method, the currency, the pay day and who pays the fees. Keep a record of every payment, for your taxes and in case of a dispute.

M-Pesa, in Kenya. Two routes we checked:

  • Safaricom's M-PESA PayPal service lets you link PayPal to M-PESA in the M-PESA app and withdraw your PayPal balance, held in US dollars, to M-PESA in shillings. Safaricom charges 3% on the daily exchange rate, and both accounts must be in the same name.
  • Upwork's mobile wallet withdrawal, called direct to wallet, is available to freelancers in Kenya and the Philippines. Check which wallets it offers when you add it. A new withdrawal method becomes active after three days, and the name on your wallet must match your verified Upwork name.

Taxes.

  • Philippines: register with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) as self-employed, using Form 1901 or online through ORUS. If your gross receipts are ₱3 million a year or less, you can choose to pay 8% income tax on the amount above ₱250,000 (TRAIN law, Revenue Memorandum Order 23-2018).
  • Kenya: ask the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) or a local accountant how to declare income from foreign clients.
  • Nigeria: ask your State Internal Revenue Service, the Nigeria Revenue Service (which replaced FIRS in January 2026) or a local accountant.

Questions people ask

What WFH jobs are legit?

Virtual assistant, customer support, bookkeeping, social media, video editing and design are all real remote jobs. A legit offer comes from a business you can check, explains the tasks and pay in writing, tests you with a short or paid task, and never asks you to pay to get the job.

Which online jobs pay through M-Pesa?

The job doesn't decide that; the payment method does. Safaricom's M-PESA PayPal service lets you withdraw a PayPal balance to M-PESA, with a 3% charge on the daily exchange rate, and Upwork offers a mobile wallet withdrawal for freelancers in Kenya (check that it lists M-Pesa when you set it up). Agree the method with your client before you start.

What is the best job website in the Philippines?

It depends on the job you want. JobStreet and Indeed Philippines list jobs with local employers. OnlineJobs.ph and Upwork connect you with foreign clients. StaffPick works differently: you build a free tested profile and businesses in the US, UK and Australia find you.

How much do online jobs pay in the Philippines?

Filipino VAs working full time for foreign clients report $480 to $2,000 a month, by experience (OnlineJobs.ph, April 2026). On Upwork, typical VA rates are $10 to $20 an hour with a $13 median, and Upwork says Philippines-based freelancers often sit at the lower end for general admin work. Local VA job postings on Indeed Philippines show ₱27,225 a month.

Can I work remotely from Kenya?

Yes. You need a reliable connection, good English and working hours that overlap with your clients. Nairobi is three hours ahead of London in UK winter, so a London 9 to 5 runs from noon to 8 pm in Nairobi.
