What you pay a bookkeeper depends less on the person than on the route: a freelancer by the hour, a full-time remote hire, a bookkeeping firm on a monthly package, or an in-house employee. This guide puts the published numbers side by side, explains what moves the price, and shows how to outsource without losing control of your own books.
The short answer
| Route | Published price | A month, roughly |
|---|---|---|
| Freelance bookkeeper on Upwork | $11–25 an hour typical, plus a 5% marketplace fee | Your hours × the rate |
| Full-time remote bookkeeper in the Philippines, hired direct | $600–1,000 beginner, $1,075–1,400 intermediate, $1,200–2,000 expert (listed as accountant) | $600–2,000 |
| Bookkeeping firm | Bookkeeper360 from $400 a month; catch-up work from $1,000 | From $400, scaling with your books |
| US in-house clerk | Median $24.36 an hour ($50,670 a year), May 2025 | About $4,220 in wages, before payroll taxes and benefits |
Sources and dates are listed at the end. The Upwork figure is a freelance hourly rate set by freelancers worldwide. The Philippine figures are full-time monthly salaries that remote workers report on OnlineJobs.ph (April 2026). For comparison, local Philippine employers advertise bookkeepers at about ₱24,036 a month on Indeed; that is a local salary, not what foreign clients pay.
What moves the price
- Transactions. Fifty bank lines a month and two thousand are different jobs. Most firms price on volume or on your monthly expenses.
- Accounts. Every bank account, card, payment processor and marketplace payout adds reconciliation work.
- Catch-up. Months of uncategorised transactions cost more than keeping current. Bookkeeper360 lists catch-up and clean-up projects from $1,000.
- Payroll and bills. Running payroll, paying bills and chasing invoices are extra hours on top of categorising.
- Software. Clean bank feeds in QuickBooks or Xero make every hour go further.
- Experience. A bookkeeper who knows your industry's quirks, such as inventory, sales tax or multi-currency, costs more and needs less checking.
Outsourced bookkeeping: how it works
There are two main models:
- A firm gives you a team, a monthly package and a set closing date. You get continuity if one person leaves, and less control over who does the work.
- A remote bookkeeper you hire directly, freelance or full-time, works in your accounting software under your rules. It's the cheapest route per hour, and you manage the work.
Either way, keep the books in an accounting subscription you own, and give the bookkeeper their own user login. The reason is practical: providers close. Bench, a bookkeeping service that said it served "more than 35,000" small businesses, shut its platform on 27 December 2024 with the notice that "the Bench platform will no longer be accessible". Employer.com then acquired it and told TechCrunch Bench had "approximately 12,000 customers". Books that live in an accounting account you own don't disappear when a provider does, so own the file and export it monthly.
What a remote bookkeeper should and shouldn't do
Hand off:
- Categorising transactions and reconciling bank and card accounts every week.
- Sending invoices, logging bills and chasing overdue payments with your approved wording.
- Preparing payroll inputs and month-end reports: profit and loss, balance sheet, accounts receivable and payable ageing.
- Keeping receipts attached and a short list of questions for you each month.
Keep with you or your accountant:
- Approving payments and moving money.
- Tax returns and tax advice, which belong with a qualified accountant.
- Any decision about how to treat a transaction you're unsure about.
Is a bookkeeper still worth it with AI?
Software already does a lot of the typing. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks to fall 6% from 2025 to 2035 and says "Software innovations have automated many of the tasks performed" by them. That changes what you pay for: less data entry, more checking, reconciling and catching what the automation got wrong. Hire for that.
How to test a bookkeeper
- A reconciliation test. Send a sample bank statement and a ledger with five planted errors. Ask them to reconcile it and list what they found.
- A software check. Ask which of QuickBooks, Xero or your own system they've used, for how long, and for which kind of business.
- A written question. Ask how they'd handle a transaction they can't categorise. You want "I'd flag it and ask", not a guess.
Everyone listed on StaffPick for bookkeeping has passed a bookkeeper quiz, an English test and a typing test, and their scores sit on their profile with the date.

Questions people ask
How much does a bookkeeper cost per month?
A full-time remote bookkeeper in the Philippines reports $600 to $2,000 a month on OnlineJobs.ph (listed as accountant, April 2026), depending on experience. Bookkeeping firms price by the size of your books: Bookkeeper360, for example, starts from $400 a month. A part-time freelancer billed by the hour costs whatever your monthly hours add up to.
What is the hourly rate for a bookkeeper?
Upwork's typical range for bookkeepers is $11 to $25 an hour, from past contracts worldwide. The median US in-house bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerk earned $24.36 an hour in May 2025, before payroll taxes and benefits.
Is it worth outsourcing bookkeeping?
Usually, once the books take more than a few hours a month or fall behind. The test is simple: if you can't produce an up-to-date profit and loss and a reconciled bank balance on request, the cost of a bookkeeper is likely lower than the cost of late or wrong numbers.
Is AI replacing bookkeepers?
Partly. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks to fall 6% from 2025 to 2035, because software has automated many of their tasks. The work moving to people is review, reconciliation, catching errors and answering your questions.
